Thoughts in Passing

I skipped sending out a newsletter in November, due to holiday travel and sickness (a winter cold that turned into pneumonia and bronchitis that I'm still suffering from). You can see the new markets that were added during that time period here: http://www.aswiebe.com/writing/archive2016.html#111516.

A couple of days ago, I was reading a self-care article that a friend linked to me (Whiskey-hiding unicorns were involved. Don't ask.), and I ran across a new concept that I think is absolutely brilliant: the not-to-do list. Way easier than a to-do list! I'm working on getting a writing piece done by deadline, so I'm embracing this concept ... at least until mid-January.

What I've been up to lately, writing-wise:

I spoke on an unusually eventful panel about Women Writing SF. One of the audience members was the subject of an unprovoked physical attack during it. We're doing a continuation of the panel in St. Paul at the AZ Gallery on January 17. I have hopes that it will be interesting, and inspiring, and less eventful.

I was also at WordBrew, where I was "the most animated" performer as I read "In Their Image," a philosophical SF story with pink murderbears. You can enjoy that here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dcApiKSwRhM

Featured Market
Scout.ai wants near-future hard science fiction.

We're especially interested in character-driven vignettes that explore the near-term impacts of artificial intelligence, automation, genetic augmentation, and space travel, and the impacts of technology on governance, climate, and social structures. We also enjoy being surprised by original or unexpected topics.

Thoughtful but accessible fiction will constitute the majority of our purchases, but there’s always room for humor. Also, a note that when we say near-term, we're looking for vignettes that portray what you think will be viable or probable in the next 1-7 years. We realize there's plenty of variability in that range based on human optimism and pessimism and we're OK with that.

Basics: SF, 250-3,000 words, accepts reprints (unpaid), pays $.08/word. Guidelines: https://scout.submittable.com/submit.

New Markets 2016-10: All Hail Our Robot Conquerors!

Thoughts in Passing

What makes a good short story? I recently heard a definition that was along these lines: "A story about a thing that is happening while something else big is going on in the back ground." This fits with the way I have begun to think about my story construction. I always come up with the big idea first. Then I look for a personal story that fits in the foreground. I have a list of useful or awesome things to incorporate. And recently, I've started to think about ways to subtly (oh so subtly) address some of the Big Questions within stories. Big existential philosophy questions. A story *about* those questions would be too heavy, but a story that makes a few of its readers think about those questions? Almost tangentially, without This Is The One Answer hitting them over the head? That's just about right.

What I've been up to lately, writing-wise:
Pete Sutton's Sick City Syndrome is now out! "But Abra," you may ask, "what does that have to do with you?" Well, Pete included some material from other authors in his book as part of the worldbuilding. My contribution, "Dear Miss Dilemma," is near the middle of Chapter 1. Conveniently, that is within Amazon's "Look Inside" free sample. Go, read my piece, and get a taste of the rest of the book for free!

Dear Miss Dilemma,

I've followed your column for years, but I never expected to be writing to you for help! I hope you can advise me as to what I should do. I am very worried about my nai nai. She has always been an independent and strong-willed woman, but I know she feels lost since my grandfather's death. In her grief, she has become irrational.

She denies that my grandfather's ghost exists.

Featured Market
All Hail Our Robot Conquerors Anthology seeks SF themed to 50s/60s-style robots, pays pro rates. Sister anthologies are themed to underwater adventure and personified Death.

ALL HAIL OUR ROBOT CONQUERORS! is to feature stories where the robots of the story somehow harken back to the 50s/60s style of robots. The story can be set in the far future, but at some point there should be a significant nod toward the robots from that era—either a significantly advanced robot that is simply housed in a 50s/60s style shell, or a robot exactly like those from the 50s/60s but used in an interesting and believable way in the story. Stories featuring more interesting takes on the 50s/60s style robots, and twists on how they are integrated into the story, will receive more attention than those with more generalized robots. So be creative and use your robot in an unusual and unexpected way. We are looking for a range of tones, from humorous all the way up to dark.

Basics: SF, less than 7,500 words, no reprints, pays $.06/word, due 12/31/2016. Guidelines: http://jpsorrow.livejournal.com/488157.html.

Thoughts in Passing

Now that the kids are in school (the littlest one for only three mornings a week), I'm struggling with the eternal question: how do I budget my time? Writing is one of those things where almost every aspect of it will expand to fill up however much time you give it. The famous productivity metaphor of putting the big rock in the bucket first doesn't work as well when instead of rocks and sand you have seven fire hoses! We'll see how it goes.

What I've been up to lately, writing-wise:

Presentations and novella revisions, mostly. I also heard back about my tiny part in a project that was tabled a while ago--because they needed to pay me because it's going ahead! That was a delightful surprise, like finding $20 in your winter coat when you take it out of storage. You'll hear more about this once it's out.

Helios Quarterly Magazine seeks SF/F/Horror for themed issues.

UPCOMING ISSUE

The secrets being kept from us reveal a world in of themselves. Science fiction has a long speculative history of new technology and species, the likes of which humanity has never seen. The horror genre always aims to excite and instill fear, with depictions of possessions and cruel vengeance. Fantasy literature can always teeter on the edge of a grim dark worldview. RE_ACTED wants stories that explore the dark side of human progression. What are the secrets we’ve erased from our families shared histories? What is the government, society, or even the universe itself trying to shield us from seeing? Open to submit between October 1- October 15 11:59PM EST

Basics: SF/F/H, multiple lengths (100 words, 500-1,500 words, 4,000-10,000 words serialized), no reprints, pays $.02-$.03/word, has submission periods. Guidelines: http://heliosquarterly.com/index.php/submissions/.

Thoughts in Passing

Between attending science fiction and fantasy conventions, speaking on panels, performing at readings, and teaching a writing class, it feels like this summer has been all Go! Go! Go! with very little time for actual writing. I have big plans for all the writing I'll get done once the kids are in school (it's only a week away!). In the meantime, I'm glad I have a spreadsheet to keep track of all the projects and deadlines and other related commitments that I've picked up during the aforementioned conventions and class. I like spreadsheets. (You might have guessed.)

What I've been up to lately, writing-wise:

See previous statement! This summer I attended 4th Street Fantasy, CONvergence, and MidAmeriCon II (AKA Worldcon).

You can hear me on the Science For the People podcast discussing, basically, how to build public support for space exploration. This is a recording of the CONvergence panel titled, "The Risk of Going Nowhere." I may have gone a little to the Dark Side on the topic. You decide.

As usual, we encourage authors to subvert these sample themes, to expand upon what “gods and/or monsters” means, and adapt the prompt to other possible connotations and genres under the Speculative Fiction umbrella.

What We’re Looking For:

  • DIVERSITY. We want to read and publish short stories that reflect the diverse world we live in, about and from traditionally underrepresented perspectives. We more than welcome stories featuring LGBTQIA characters. Following Fireside Fiction’s recent report on underrepresented black writers, we more than welcome black writers to submit their stories.
  • Middle Grade, Young Adult, and Adult audience submissions are welcome. Good speculative fiction is ageless!
  • We are VERY keen on receiving Romance stories – or stories with strong romantic elements.
  • We are VERY keen on receiving Horror stories – or stories with strong horror elements.
  • Creativity & Subversion. We love subversive stories. We want you to challenge the status quo with your characters, story telling technique, and themes.

Basics: SF/F/H, 1,500-17,500 words, no reprints, pays $.06/word + royalties ($500 maximum), due by 12/31/2016. Guidelines: http://thebooksmugglers.com/2016/08/book-smugglers-publishing-open-call-for-short-stories-submissions-summer-2017.html.

Thoughts in Passing

When I first started writing, I had no idea where to begin in creating an author bio. Now I do, so I'm sharing what I've learned!

What I've been up to lately, writing-wise:
Lots!

I'm preparing to teach a class on submitting science fiction and fantasy short stories (the above article on creating an author bio is part of that).

This Sunday, I'm performing at an acquaintance's book release party, which will feature an extravaganza of art and music and speculative fiction. Should be awesome! If you're in the vicinity of the Twin Cities, you should check it out: http://www.meetup.com/MinnSpec/events/232398314/

And last but not least, my post-apocalyptic steampunk novel A Circus of Brass and Bone is 25% off through the end of July (with the code on Smashwords), and there's a giveaway for it on Goodreads.

Featured Market
Brave Boy World anthology (Pink Narcissus Press) seeks science fiction with a transgender male protagonist, pays $100.

Stories must fall into the category of science fiction (hard or soft), and must feature a transgender male protagonist. Given the nature of speculative fiction, however, we are willing to consider stories that feature non-binary, intersex or genderfluid characters, but for this project, any non-binary character should either identify strongly as male, or the story should deal with themes of what it means to be "masculine" or a "man" in terms of the world setting in which the story takes place. The basics: themed SF, 20,000 - 40,000 words, pays an advance against royalties or a flat rate TBD, no reprints.

No erotica. Furthermore, stories that fetishize trans people will be rejected forthwith with a salty response from one of the editors.

Basics: SF with transman protagonist, open wordcount, reprints okay, pays $100 ($50 for reprints). Guidelines: http://www.pinknarc.com/submissions.html.

Aswiebe's Market List Update 2016-06: Tor.com Novellas

Thoughts in Passing

I have always found critical analysis of good books difficult. If I am reading a good book, it is incredibly difficult for me to keep from being immersed in it.

It is difficult for most people to see the tropes and narrative conventions and implicit social mores in their own writing. How does a fish see the water it's swimming in?

One trick I'm going to try when reading is to pay attention to my own reaction. When do I think I know where the story's going, and why do I expect that particular outcome? When do I feel bored or disappointed, and why? What expectations do I bring into the story that aren't being met? How can I-the-writer deal with that expectation in an unexpected way that would still work for me-the-reader?

What I've been up to lately, writing-wise:

Writing and conventions and waiting to hear back about publications oh my!

Featured Market
You have 9 days left to submit to Tor.com's themed novella submissions. They close at the end of June.

Until the end of June, Tor.com will only be considering novellas of between 20,000 and 40,000 words that fit one of the following science fiction subgenres:

  • Time Travel
  • Space Opera
  • Near Future Thriller
  • Cyberpunk

If you have a novella you want to submit that doesn’t fit these parameters, don’t give up hope. Our plan is to rotate which genre we’re soliciting periodically, so check back here and on our submissions guideline page regularly. Once we’ve worked our way through these submissions, we’ll re-open for a different genre. Please don’t ask us what genre we’ll be moving to—we’ll be deciding that closer to the time.

The basics: themed SF, 20,000 - 40,000 words, pays an advance against royalties or a flat rate TBD, no reprints. Guidelines at http://www.tor.com/submissions-guidelines/.

Thoughts in Passing

Is there something on your to-do list that's writing-related? Something nagging at the back of your mind? Maybe it's research, or revising, or submitting, or answering an email, or even writing itself. Set a timer for 10 minutes, STOP READING THIS NEWSLETTER RIGHT NOW, and go do that thing for ten minutes. If the thing is writing, actually write! Don't stare at a blank page, don't think about writing ... actually write. You can use an application like The Most Dangerous Writing App to keep from getting distracted.

(Leave this window open! Come back afterwards!)

What I've been up to lately, writing-wise:

Mostly dithering. I have so many things I feel like I need to do right now that I have been dithering between them instead of actually getting anything done. Bah.

Featured Market
Deep Magic publishes clean fantasy and sci-fi stories.

What you first need to understand is that we aim to be the dominant magazine for clean fantasy and sci-fi stories. It’s our tag-line. If you can tell a gripping story that doesn’t rely on sex, swearing, and graphic violence—you’ve come to the right place.

We Do Not Publish the Following
  • Stories with graphic violence
  • Stories with mature sexual themes
  • Stories with profanity or vulgarity. We want a broad, family-friendly audience; think original Lord of the Rings trilogy or Star Wars.
  • Stories featuring or glorifying illegal drug use
  • Stories with graphic child abuse or glorifying child abuse in any way
  • Stories not within the Fantasy and Science Fiction Genres. It’s got to have some magic or cool technology in it!
  • Poorly written stories

The basics: SF/F, 1,000 - 40,000 words, pays $.08/wd for the first 5,000 words, $.06/wd for additional words up to 16,000 wd, caps at $1,060, accepts reprints. Guidelines at http://deepmagic.co/submissions/#.

Part of the trick to getting the most out of writing time is to have fallow non-writing time when the subconscious can ponder and process and imagine without having other engagements--whether those are good (joys, projects) or bad (worries, stress, illness). When you're a parent, that becomes a *real* trick!

What I've been up to lately, writing-wise:

Registration is open for the class I'm teaching on formatting and submitting short stories! By the end of this class, students will have submitted their short story and will possess a set of skills and tools to assist them in the future. More information and registration at The Loft Literary Center: https://www.loft.org/shop/product_detail/4/adult_class/366/submit_it_now_fantasy_and_science_fiction_short_stories/.

Writing is going well. I'm halfway through the half-dragon/half-succubus urban fantasy side project, and I'm at about the same point in the contemporary fantasy/thriller in Belize main project. These are different wordcounts, though, because the urban fantasy will end up around 60,000 words and the Belize fantasy will be about 100,000 words. So naturally, now that I'm deep into two novels at the same time, I feel like I should get a few more short stories written and out. And of course, I always have the big backlog of editing to do.

My week has been dealing with stomach flu and a construction project that left our bathroom unusable. Never underestimate the power of illness or house renovations to disrupt your writing schedule ... or your character's story narrative, I suppose. So often we think we have to put super-dramatic stresses on our characters, when sometimes the same kind of day-to-day problems that we experience can work just as well (and be less of a cliche).

What I've been up to lately, writing-wise:

I tried an online writing app, The Most Dangerous Writing App. This is one of the ones that erases everything you've written if you stop typing. You can set it for times beginning with 5 minutes. It isn't as dreadful as it sounds! The screen changes color and the letters fade to give you warning, and you can always just hit the space bar to keep it from erasing what you've done. I find it does an excellent job of keeping me concentrated on my writing, although it works best if I do a quick scene outline before beginning, and research-heavy scenes are obviously not a good choice for it. But it more than doubled my words-per-hour average when I used it in 10-minute intervals, even with extra clean-up time after writing to smooth out the rough edges.

Sunvault: Stories of Solarpunk & Eco-Speculation anthology wants diverse, optimistic environmental science fiction and fantasy.

The anthology will focus on times of environmental crisis and the people inhabiting these tipping points, fighting to effect change and seek solutions, even if it’s already too late. Remember: hope can spark in even the grimmest of situations.

The basics: environmental-themed, science fiction and fantasy, 500 - 7,500 words, $.06/wd, reprints okay, submissions will be open for 1 month after Kickstarter funds in April. Guidelines at https://sunvaultantho.wordpress.com/submissions/.

A writing to-do list is a powerful tool, but only if you include actual due dates and actually check the to-do list. In possibly related (and not so random) news, my apologies for skipping January's newsletter. January had a lot going on in my personal life.

What I've been up to lately, writing-wise:

Taxes and paperwork and other less-fun-than-writing things have been eating my writing time, as have some large photography projects, but I think I'm almost out of the weeds!

"In Their Image" is now available to read or to download as a podcast over at Escape Pod as part of their monthlong Artemis Rising II event. Read it for philosophy and fluffy pink murderbear aliens! Readers compare it positively to Speaker for the Dead.
Excerpt:

When I stepped off the shuttle and breathed in the dry grass scent of Trade City, I was still confident I could launch the first human church on Landry’s World. My fellow passengers had been politely non-interested when I explained the mission my church had sent me on. A few had shaken their heads as they glided away. I thought maybe they objected to a female preacher. Or maybe it was because I’m an ex-marine. I’m an “ex-” a lot of things: ex-marine, ex-atheist, ex-drunk, ex-wife, and ex-mother–that last because I was a poor enough mother that when my kids grew up, they washed their hands of me.

In other exciting news, my teaching proposal has been accepted at The Loft, a Minneapolis literary center. I will be teaching a class this summer on submitting fantasy, science fiction, and horror short stories. From submission formatting to market research to actually submitting a story, this class will walk students through the process of sending out their short story. By the end of this class, students will have submitted their story and will possess a new set of skills and tools to assist them in the future. I'll make another announcement when the class schedule is set and available for sign-up.

And last but certainly not least, I'm going to be launching a newsletter (not about writing markets) in the next couple of weeks. Every three to four months, I'll tell you about wonderful and bizarre things, including new publications, free reads, newsletter exclusives, and giveaways. Social media may come and go, fade out of use, or randomly hide things (ahem, Facebook, ahem!), so I really encourage you to join my newsletter group if you want to keep in touch. And signing up gets you a free novella-length ebook! You can join at my website OR (special offer!) by simply clicking "Reply" to this email and changing the subject line to "Subscribe News." If you're interested, do it now!

Ghosts on Drugs anthology wants, well, humorous stories about ghosts on drugs.

The only rule is that a tale include some version of at least one ghost who's on some version of at least one drug.

And both key terms are broadly defined—e.g., a ghostwriter hooked on cough syrup could fit, and a dead ancient god with an inhumanly intense craving to be worshipped again could too.

[...]This book is designed to be playful and fun, so we're especially seeking stories that are a mix of comedy and other genres—e.g., comedy & fantasy, comedy & SF, comedy & horror, comedy & thriller, comedy & Western, comedy & adventure. That said, we'll consider a great tale of any genre, or combination of genres.

The basics: humorous, any genre, 250-10,000 words, $.15/wd for the first 2,500 words and then $.06/wd, no reprints, due by 5/01/2016. Guidelines at http://www.ghostsondrugs.com/.
